Horses are uniquely attuned to human emotions and nervous system states. As prey animals, their survival depends on their ability to sense danger and incongruence.
In our equine-facilitated learning sessions, horses provide immediate, honest feedback about your internal state, helping you:
Traditional approaches often miss a crucial component of healing: the body. Trauma and stress are stored physically in our nervous system and body tissues.
My somatic approach focuses on:
Experience the transformative power of somatic practices and equine facilitated learning. Take the first step toward feeling safe, regulated, and connected in your body.
As an adoptee and trauma survivor, I understand firsthand the impact a nervous system in survival mode can have on our mental well-being and day-to-day life.
My personal growth journey led me to discover the profound impact of somatic work and equine facilitated learning. This powerful approach combines body-based practices, breath work, and mindfulness techniques to help us connect with our bodies, regulate our nervous system, and explore from the inside out.
Today, I'm passionate about guiding others through their own exploration journeys, using the unique combination of somatic awareness and the intuitive wisdom of horses.

No, Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) and somatic practices are not therapy or psychotherapy. As a Somatic Attachment Practitioner and EFL instructor, I am not a licensed psychotherapist or mental health professional. The work we do is educational and experiential in nature, focused on helping you develop greater body awareness and nervous system regulation. While many people find this work supportive of their overall wellbeing, it is not a substitute for professional mental health treatment. If you're experiencing significant mental health challenges, I encourage you to work with a licensed mental health professional, and I'm happy to collaborate with your care team.
No experience with horses is needed. In fact, sometimes having no preconceptions about horses can be beneficial. The sessions are designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their prior experience with horses. All activities are ground-based (no riding) and focus on observation and interaction rather than horsemanship skills.
While traditional therapy often focuses on cognitive understanding and verbal processing, our somatic equine approach engages the body and nervous system directly. Horses provide immediate, non-judgmental feedback about your internal state, creating awareness that might take months to achieve in talk-based approaches alone. This experiential approach can lead to deeper insights and more lasting change, especially for those who have found traditional approaches helpful but insufficient for complete personal growth.
Sessions take place outside at a beautiful peaceful farm facility Near Mebane, North Carolina. The natural setting enhances experiential learning, providing a calm environment free from everyday distractions. Directions will be provided upon booking, and we're happy to help with recommendations for local accommodations if you're traveling from out of town.
Wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather and closed-toe shoes. Avoid clothing that makes loud noises (like nylon windbreakers) as this can startle the horses. Layers are recommended as outdoor temperatures can vary. You may get a bit dusty, so avoid your best attire. Most importantly, wear something you can move freely in and feel comfortable spending time outdoors in.
Everyone's journey is unique, but most clients find that a series of 6-8 sessions allows for meaningful progress. Some clients experience significant shifts after just one session, while others benefit from ongoing work. After your first session, we can discuss what might be most supportive for your specific situation. Many clients choose to start with a single session to experience the approach, then opt for a package to continue the work.
Yes, our approach is grounded in current neuroscience and research. Somatic approaches are increasingly recognized in scientific literature as effective for addressing stress, anxiety, and attachment issues. Equine-assisted interventions have been studied for their effectiveness with various populations, showing promising results for improving emotional regulation, self-awareness, and social functioning. Our specific methodology inspired by the HERD institute combines these evidence-based approaches with Maria's specialized training in somatic attachment work and nervous system regulation.
