When she woke up recently from a dream about her oldest son being shot to death as he walked home from 7-Eleven with a bottle of iced tea and Skittles, Maria Roach pledged to do something to help the mother who had lived her nightmare.

For days, Roach had been haunted by the slaying of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. He looked like an older version of her sons. He died in Sanford, Fla., near Orlando, where she and her husband lived until three years ago. Her heart went out to both of Trayvon’s parents, but as the mother of Max, 6, and Mason, 5, she felt a special connection with his mother, Sybrina Fulton. (MORE...)

Maria Roach's SignOn.org petition asked for justice for Trayvon Martin through the involvement of the Justice Department. In less than two weeks of its creation, the petition generated over half a million signatures,  attracting interest from the news media. Over 520,000 signatures were delivered to Attorney General Holder's office on March 26, 2012.

Jane Velez-Mitchell hosted a show from Los Angeles "The Trayvon case 'a larger social issue'" including Maria Roach and actress Tichina Arnold who, from the first day, voiced outrage at the lack of an arrest in Trayvon Martin's death. Ms. Arnold was instrumental in spreading word of Maria's petition via @Twitter.
